Doe Deere: Fashion Designer Turned Successful Makeup Entrepreneur

Inspirery is a platform that conducts exclusive interviews with entrepreneurs and celebrity businessmen. Recently, Inspirery sat down for a talk with Lime Crime Cosmetic’s founder and CEO, Doe Deere.


Doe Deere is described as the “Unicorn Queen” for her colorful choices in clothing and hair dye and makeup. She was born in Russia but grew up in New York City, this is where she studied fashion design. During her time spent studying fashion design, she would gather the knowledge required to start her own company, even if it wasn’t in the industry she originally intended.


The interview started off with the obvious question when the interviewer asked her how she got started in the business. “I began with designing and making my own clothing designs,” Deere replied. “I got the idea to create my own makeup to complement my outfits when I modeled them for the website…I couldn’t find the exact bright colors I wanted, [so] I decided to start making them.


Doe Deere says she has always had two passions in life. One of them is makeup and the other is fairy tales. “I decided to combine my two loves to make an imaginative…brand that’s fun for everyone to wear.”


The interviewer pressed Deere for her methods of money making next and she says that her magically inspiring and cruelty free cosmetics are available online and an in retail stores all across the United States. Lime Crime’s makeup is even available in some international markets.


It didn’t take Deere very long to start turning a profit, she says that she first began selling her clothing independently on eBay in 2004 and in less than a year she was selling her products at a steady-pace. It was eBay where she created her very first online market place. Four years later her makeup store officially launched as a collection of eye shadow, several types of blush, glitter, primers and fine crushes that started at only 12 dollars. Learn more:


Doe Deere took an unconventional path of marketing her products to consumers. She made make up tutorials online, using word of mouth and clicks to make the public knowledgeable of her brand.


It was with her makeup tutorial filled blog, which also hosted contests and challenges for its readers, that she made her first sale. Doe Deere says her main marketing strategy now is to always listen to feedback and to give people what they want. “People will tell you what they want,” she began. “So listen to what they’re saying and respond appropriately in social media and in your advertising campaigns.”


The interviewer closed out the session by asking Doe Deere exactly where she got the unique name for her brand and she reminded the interviewer that she loves fairy tales. “[Fairy tales] will rhyme just because,” she said. “I loved the way lime crime sounded…and my brand always enjoys playing with words and creating as many fun puns as possible.” As an example she mentioned one of her brand names “Airborne Unicorn.”


Helane Morrison Working to Regain Confidence

Compliance officers play an important part in the corporate world. Their opinions play a role in decisions made by corporations. Helane Morrison has become a leader in this male dominated field. She has worked a range of jobs from a position at the SEC to a journalist. Her goal has been to help the public regain confidence in the finance industry and fight corruption.


An economic crisis in 2007 revealed widespread corruption within the finance industry. Falsified records and fraud were just some of the issues exposed. Institutions that people once trusted were shown to be ripping them off or closing. Confidence in investing went down dramatically. She is the general counsel, chief compliance officer, and manager director there. She is in a position to influence how people feel about the finance industry and her reputation of ethics exceeds her.


Helane Morrison has been the head of the SEC for the Northwest Office and worked for the SEC from 1999 to 2007. In this position, she covered compliance issues for northern California and five other states. Before that, she worked for a private law firm where she was made partner. Prior to that, she worked as clerks to two Federal judges. She has been a journalist. Her goal has always remained the same: to fight corruption within the industry. As a compliance officer, Helane Morrison is able to ensure that businesses follow regulations.


Compliance Officer Helane Morrison Effecting Change

The concept of the compliance officer is something that more companies need to consider. This is the best possible way for any organization to make sure that it doesn’t go up in flames with corrupt schemes. 

People that are looking for Helane Morrison can see how she has transitioned over the years. She has worked as a regional director for the Securities Exchange and Commission. She has also worked as a lawyer. That is what makes her a great compliance officer as her time at the SEC prepared her for all the in’s and out’s of the position. There are so many companies that are looking for a way to stay up on new laws, but many companies do not have a lawyer in place to help with this. Hall Capital acquired Helane as a compliance officer to help the organization steer clear of the laws that executives may be unaware of. 

Morrison has a great sense of responsibility, but she can handle it. There are many people that are looking at what she has been has done so far, and now she is associated with an organization where even more funds are being managed. Companies are going to need the help of compliance officers at all times for major decisions.

Even executives with the best intentions are going to have some limitations in the areas of the law. They may not know what is the right way to do something so it takes an inside investigator to make sure that everything is running as it should be. Helane Morrison as the ability to make sure they’re in compliance and that everything is being implemented in accordance to what is right.

The bottom line of it all is that companies to have compliance officers are going to be a lot less likely to fall victim to the corruption that a lot of other companies face with scandals. These companies are going survive because a compliance officer is going to govern the organization according to the standard.

A lot of company leaders wish that they had someone that was knowledgeable enough to work as a compliance officer from the inside. I believe that Kathryn Hall made a very wise decision to hire someone with a background like the one Helane Morrison has.
